iOS 27 will offer additional AI-powered grammar assistance, according to an unconfirmed report Monday. This will go beyond the writing tools already available through Apple Intelligence and will work in macOS and iPadOS, too.
In addition, Apple will also use AI to generate wallpapers for their devices and also make shortcuts easier to create in the Shortcuts app.
iOS 27 could turn your iPhone into an AI writing assistant
Plenty of leaks indicate that Apple is preparing a major expansion of its artificial intelligence capabilities with this fall’s iOS 27 launch. The company needs to introduce AI-powered productivity tools to catch up with features already offered by rivals like Google and Samsung.
Some of these AI tools will focus on improving users’ writing, Bloomberg reported Monday. Apple introduced Writing Tools with iOS 18, using Apple Intelligence to rewrite and summarize text, but the company is supposedly developing a more advanced grammar-checking system designed to compete more directly with third-party services like Grammarly.
Despite the upgrade, the new version will apparently work much like the current one. Apple Intelligence already gives users the option to ask Writing Tools to suggest corrections to grammar, punctuation, spelling and more. But that doesn’t mean the suggestions are always the best.
The upgraded Writing Tools will supposedly become easier to find after the next operating system upgrade, too.
“Apple is also working to make the AI writing features more prominent throughout iOS and iPadOS,” Bloomberg reported. “The company is testing a new ‘Write With Siri’ toggle at the top of the keyboard, as well as a ‘Help Me Write’ option that appears when users activate Siri while working in a text field.”
These new AI writing tools could become a major selling point for students, office workers, etc. … anyone who frequently writes on an iPhone or iPad.
More AI features in iOS 27: Shortcuts and wallpapers
The Shortcuts app lets users automate everyday tasks across apps and services. They can be useful, but also difficult to set up. iOS 27 might fix that.
Apple is said to be rebuilding the Shortcuts app to let users take advantage of AI. Instead of manually assembling Shortcuts step by step, users will reportedly be able to simply describe what they want and let the software create it.
“In the updated app, users are presented with a prompt asking, ‘What do you want your shortcut to do?’ along with a text field to describe the request,” according to Bloomberg. “The system then automatically builds and installs the shortcut on the device.”
Apple is also supposedly working on a system to let users create wallpapers for their iPhone, iPad or Mac with AI. This will apparently be part of the wallpaper picker and use an improved Image Playground app.

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference kicks off June 8, and the fresh AI capabilities coming to iOS 27, macOS 27 and iPadOS 27 should be highlights of the keynote address on that date.
The main focus is likely to be on a massively improved Siri voice assistant. But iPhone users can also expect updates to the Camera app, plus AI editing of images. Mac users can look forward to a Liquid Glass revamp.
